UP: Sports company owner cheated of Rs 16 cr in Meerut; accused disappears after leaving suicide note

Meerut: In yet another incident of fraud reported from Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh, a woman director of a prominent sports company in the city has been cheated of Rs 16.50 cr by her acquaintance on the promise of providing COVID-related items. The accused has been identified as Pranav Kohli, who is said to be the husband of Vinita Kohli.

The victim Vinita Kohli has approached ADG-Rajeev Sabharwal in connection with the cheating. Vinita is a director of Stag Sports Solutions Private Company.

The accused Pranav Kohli, a resident of Sadar Bazar, had promised to supply various items like sanitizer, COVID testing kits, oxygen concentrators, mask among other things to Vinita’s Stag company.

Initially, the accused provided goods to the company on time that led to Stag company making good profits, according to a report in Hindi daily Hindustan.

Pranav disappears leaving suicide note

According to complainant Vinita Kohli, she trusted Pranav after he supplied goods on time. Later, Pranav proposed that the good he imports from abroad are costly and he can source the same items from the local market at low rates. 

After this proposal, Pranav made Vinita make Rs 16.50 cr payment to several companies but no goods were delivered to her company. During the preliminary probe, it was found that most of the companies to which payment was were either fake or shut down. 

On October 19, Pranav disappeared after leaving a suicide note which said he had suffered a loss of Rs 15 cr.

Case to be transferred to EOW

According to rules, fraud cases over Rs 5 cr are probed by Economic Offences Wing. In this case, the Medical police have contacted senior officers requesting them to transfer the case to EOW.
