Family members of the 28-year-old Sangrur man who had committed
suicide after being harassed by an immigration consultancy firm on
Saturday met police officials in SAS Nagar seeking action against the
employee of the firm.
In the past five years in SAS Nagar alone, 578 cases were registered
against immigration consultants, often after complaints by people who
alleged they were duped.
Most of the victims are not only wailing over their shattered dreams,
but also the losses: they had paid the firms after taken loans or
selling off their property, and are now struggling to get the money
back. But some were too broken.
In December last year, Sukhwant Singh, a 28-year-old from Sangrur,
committed suicide after a Phase 1-based firm — Rudraksh Group Overseas
Solutions — failed to repay the Rs 2.5 lakh he had paid for them to send
him abroad. Sukhwant had tried for two years to get back the money he
had borrowed from a commission agen
“He had borrowed Rs 2.5 lakhs from a money lender (aarthiya) on
interest to pay immigration consultants for visa. They failed to arrange
for his visa and delayed the refund of money on which the interest was
adding up,” brother of the victim Baljeet Singh said.
“He had made several visits to the firm for more than two years for
refund but to no avail. Even on Wednesday, he had gone to collect money
but when the immigration company failed to refund the money, he consumed
poison,” Baljeet added.
In a meeting with senior cops, the family named an employee of the immigration consultancy firm and sought action against him.
“My brother should get justice and we are pinning hope on the cops to
take action against the persons who are responsible for his death so
that his soul may rest in peace,” Baljeet added.
“The family had named certain employees. Guilty will not be spared
and would be brought to book,” said SAS Nagar SSP Gurpreet Singh
Bhullar.
Aspirants making beeline
After the suicide, a number of aspirants who have applied for visa
through the firm are making beeline to the office to seek refund.
“The suicide is a wake up call for us. My daughter had applied for a
Visa through them but they failed to get the same. Furthermore they have
been delaying the refund of money. So I am here to take a refund as I
do not want my daughter to meet the same fate as the Sangrur youth,”
said a person hailing from Patiala.
Another applicant from Ludhiana, “I have been waiting for more than
two years to get my papers processed but the company has failed to do so
and for refund I have been making rounds. They have now assured me of
refund after the suicide and called me next week.
